Her piercing blue eyes flicked from the map to the city vista before her, then back to the map once more. Like everyone, she carried a smartphone but there was something special, something tactile about a paper map. A more authentic, genuine and personal experience and she liked that. As the cold December air fluttered the map in her hands she could barely believe she was here. She’d never done anything like this in her entire life. It was totally out of character for her. Or was it? Did she even really know? Once again a boyfriend had dumped her and she didn’t understand why. She never understood. She tried to be the best girlfriend possible. She was kind, intelligent, witty, generous and loving. But still, her relationships never lasted. It kept her awake at night, fearing there was something wrong with her — that at 26 she was somehow broken. This time, instead of wallowing in self-pity she’d done the opposite. The open courtyard was a refreshing oasis to the hustle and bustle of the street outside. The hours simply drifted by as she wandered the galleries and hallways taking in pieces by some of her favourite artists. Suddenly her precious silence was rudely interrupted by a tannoy announcement. “The Academy will be closing in 10 minutes. Please start making your way to the exits.” Had she really been here for six hours? It didn't seem that long and she hadn’t even taken a break for food or drink. As she meandered towards the exit, her mind lost in the wonders of the building, she tripped — almost completely falling — over a large A-board. Picking herself up, and feeling foolish at the same time, she was struck by a sense of karma. She read the board and ...
